One of the few restaurants that I went to while visiting our corporate offices in Bowling Green. Since I have never had Krystal before, and one of my frequent contacts from corporate ranted and raved about it, I put it on my list of places to try. So I opted out of Waffle House (I know, I know…) for dinner and went down the street to Krystal.

Ambiance: Well its fast food, and there is a early sixties retro feel to the place. It almost had a Steak n Shake feel except instead of black and white tiles on the wall, there were red and white tiles. Since it was supper time, and pretty late at that, there were few folks inside.

Menu/Price: Ok so when I walked in and say that they have “Krystal’s” I was thinking, this is a White Castle knock off! Well it pretty much is. At least it is a longer knock off, to the tune of White Castle started in 1921 and Krystal came along in 1932. History aside though, the menu was similar to that of White Castles. On the plus, they also had mini corn dogs, mini chicken and fish sandwiches and so on. They expanded from where White Castle has left off. Pricing was that of basically every fast food restaurant out there, less than $10 per person. Probably the weirdest thing on the menu was the Scramblers which were not available because it was not breakfast time. They are basically a cup of breakfast layered… not a bad idea, but I think others have done it as well.

Meal: So I could not decide what to get, five Krystal’s, one of this, one of that… Oh wait their is a sampler combo that combines all of those things. Yep sign me up! I don’t really recall the order I ate them in (because I was driving and it was dark). I think I started with the “original Krystal.” It was pretty much as I expected, much like a Slyder from White Castle. I wondered if they were made the same way as Slyder’s. I then dug into the “Chili Cheese Pup” (a mini Chili Cheese hotdog) which was pretty good. Definitely made me want more of their chili next time I was back. Next was the “Krystal Chik” which was a mini chicken sandwich. I instantly knew I made a mistake getting the combo when I should have gotten eight of these! It was the best thing I had eaten that month, hands down. The last item in the combo meal was a “Corn Pup” which is a mini corndog. It was somewhere between meh and ok, hard to top the “Chik” at that point. Lastly I popped a few of the Sweet Bites, which were best as I can tell fried doughnut holes. They were good but a little too “carnival” for me.

Service: Slow, don’t know if it was a shift change but for fast food and for not many visitors it seemed to take a while. But then again maybe they had to make my food fresh, which is not a bad thing. Otherwise the girl behind the counter was helpful in making suggestions (as she could tell I had never been to a Krystal before, I might have told her that actually).

Overall: I guess the rating fits at 1 Fork, 1 Spoon as it was better than I expected. There was enough on the menu that I would like to sample little items here and there. I did not notice if this was open 24/7 or not but if it isn’t it should be. I could see making a late night stop here… too bad the closet one to us in Iowa is Clarksville, TN. So it will be a while 🙂
