Hard to miss if your in Alexander City. Big B’s is located right on the corner of Highway 280 and Lee Street (aka highway 22) one of the main roads into Alex City. Although locals don’t think to highly of this joint, I found it met my expectations.

Ambiance:
A bit too sophisticated to be a hole in the wall but it was close. It had more of a 1930’s Whistle Stop feel. Antique ceiling fans circulated air about the place, one being a two blade fan that was still swinging if you get what I’m saying. Many antique items were about and the tables we all of an vintage wood design that you just don’t find in restaurants these days. As it was bbq, you ordered from a counter, they prepped it and you found your own seat.

Menu/Price:
The lunch special is a great deal for what you get for $7.25. You could easily spend closer to $10 if you tried to do it via their regular menu. If the special was not your thing, you could spend a bit less for just a sandwich but most of the folks also got a side and a sweet tea which came to $6.95. Why not pay the extra $.30 for chips and another side?

Meal:
Their sauce they used was a Georgia styled bbq sauce, meaning it was based or made with mustard in some fashion. Not a bad thing unless you don’t like mustard. The meat was defiantly smoked over some sort of wood as it had a nice pink smoke ring about the edges and fell apart just when being moved. Cole slaw and potato salad was ok but nothing to get excited about. Chips we’re standard ruffled chips, that many did not eat. I ate mine with the meat to bring out the flavor in the meat.

Service:
Almost quantifies as fast food. When you order it does not take long to get your meal. The crew in behind the counter was a jovial bunch as well. To top all of this out they had a hostess that I kid you night might as well have been Cathrine Bach (if you don’t know who that is you missed out on the greatest TV show ever!). By now you have probably googled who Cathrine Bach is, but this hostess refilled beverages, cleaned tables and helped some folks with their trays all the meantime looking like and dressed like Cathrine Bach.

Overall:
Well the food was great, Cathrine Bach was a peach of a hostess, and it was cheap. Sounds like a win all around to me. I am not sure why locals don’t think highly of it but what would they know anyway, or perhaps they was shuckin’ and jiv’n me away from going (another Cahtrine Bach reference).
