Editors note: This is a story from my old website. I have corrected spelling and grammatical errors as I found them. If there are related pictures I will eventually add them (once they are found and linked)
I know the title of this just gave it away, but it was the only thing i could think of. All the images are thumb nailed, Story goes as follows.
We were coming back from the West Marshall State game (which they won, congrats) and I decided to go through Eldora and come down that way to avoid traffic. Kristin was with me and she mentioned Dairy Queen. So I said it sounded good and I said I don’t think Eldora has one,so we could go to Story City, Ames, or Nevada. We decided to go to Nevada When we got to Nevada, we stopped at DQ and we both got some cool treats but no hot eats (ha ha). When we left Nevada, I told Kristin to show me where her mom hit the deer with “Kristin’s car”. She said she would.
We got to the area [on US 30], and it was in the valley where the bridge is, about one and half miles west of Twin Acres. We crossed the bridge talking about her mom hitting the deer. Then all of a sudden, without any forewarning, I just saw a big brown buck in front of us, I slammed on the brakes causing the tires to smoke. The deer went flying into the air. We remained motionless. Kristin was gripping the door handle. I was kind of in shock. I got out and tried to make light of things. In the midst of it all, it finally hit me that I need to get of the highway because I stopped and the car was on the highway. I went back to the car and keep muttering we need to get of the highway, which I did. I told Kristin to stay in the car and she did where it was warm. I think she was still pretty shook up as I was.
I was back out side surveying the car, and I thought, I better find the deer and make sure he is dead. I looked around, and hoping that he was off the highway so no one could hit him. I found the deer in the center ditch. Once I got up to him I saw a car from the oncoming side get in the left lane go through the median. It was a State Trooper. Thank goodness. I ran up to his car and he asked what was wrong so I told him, and asked if he had a flashlight I could use. He said sure and got out with me and made sure I could make it home. We then surveyed the deer again. It turned out that he was dead for sure. He was looked pretty beat up. He was a young four point, most likely less than a year old. The trooper made sure he was dead, and I thought he was still breathing. The trooper said he was not sure and he would call the DNR out.
We went back to the car to grab my insurance, and I followed the Trooper back to his car. He ran a check on my record and stuff, and he told me that he would leave me with the decision to file a report or not. He was real nice and I was glad he showed up when he did.
We then left and I stopped at Kristin’s house and stayed there kind of re-cooperating Looking back on the incident, I am very thankful for many reasons. I am thankful most importantly that neither of us were hurt, aside from being shook up. I am also thankful that I hit the brakes when I did, because I can only picture that deer sliding up the hood and through the windshield, injuring or killing us. I also find it very lucky that I was only going sixty at the time, which was five miles under the limit. I am also thankful that the deer flew forward as apposed to up and on the roof or sliding under the car and forcing us to roll. I am also thankful that I was able to control the car and keep it on the road. I am also thankful for the fact that there was not a car riding my tail. The final thing I am grateful for is that the Trooper showed up when he did.
I will be getting the car fixed up and most likely repainted so it will look like new when it is done. More to follow soon.
